Guest Post – Kelly Letky and Her Writing Space

From where I sit

I have a studio. I spend most of my waking hours there, designing printed pieces for graphics clients, making jewelry, writing, running two businesses and interacting with the world through social media. It’s a tiny room in a tiny house that has no room to spare, but I work from home, and this room has become my space. I make my living here, I nurture my soul here, I toil and while away the hours here.

Two years ago, I took this space from early-garage-sale-cast-off to something just a bit nicer. I bought cabinets to hide the office supplies and jewelry components, and installed a giant l-shaped desk that I designed and cut and built myself, thinking it would give me lots of elbow room. Yet it is a rare moment when I can actually see the top of this desk, I am a messy worker, and even when I take the time to clean it off, any empty space is immediately claimed by one of five cats. It might be my studio, but my desk is their perch.

I have a window that looks out over my garden, from there I watch the comings and goings of bird and butterfly, wildlife and kitten. There is a television in the room that is rarely turned on. There is a stereo that is rarely off. There is art that I love, and art from friends that holds personal meaning. There are plants and a vase of flowers, and a dozen or so witches balls hang from the ceiling, along with a glass spider, a glass hummingbird, several baskets.

I am myself in this room, always. It’s always messy and cluttered, but I know where everything is. There are thoughts and words written on scraps of paper everywhere. There are notebooks lining the shelves, some empty, many filled. This room has seen me through years and years of growth and life and joy and sadness, busy times, slow times, good times and bad. There are echoes of love and hope, drama and despair, boredom and frustration hiding in the corners. There is comfort here, the kind that comes with familiarity.

I slip this room on like an old pair of jeans. The view from here is my portal to the world.

I sit here and I write where I am.
