Party Time - Tell us about the “best” party you attended this year.

—————————

Okay, start the video – wait for the song to start, then commence reading.  Grab a drink if you want, dance if you want…roller skate if you want.  Live it up a little.  Just don’t hurt yourself.  Okay?  Ready?

In August 2010, my wife and I were in a pretty nasty and gnarly motorcycle accident.  For her troubles she got her ankle broken.  For mine, I ended up with a laundry list of injuries.  The most painful was broken ribs.  Broken ribs suck.  Broken ribs are the worst.  Sleeping in bed was not possible.  I spent two months sleeping in a recliner.  Once more, broken ribs suck.

The upside was we didn’t die.  The accident had a part in reuniting me with my daughter.  And in a wonderful way, we found out who our friends were as a result of the accident.  It was a blessing in disguise. (But I still hate broken ribs…)

It turned out that the one year anniversary of the accident was on a Saturday this past August.  We decided to have a party to celebrate not being dead.  Or, more appropriately, to celebrate Life.  Friends and family came from near and far to join us.  We held it at a local park with a BBQ grill and a large shelter.  The weather cooperated and remained unseasonably mild until the gathering was over.  Then it rained, but who cared at that point.

My daughter got to spend some time with her grandparents, which was a treasured time by all.  We got to see friends, nom some fabulous goodies and eat burgers and hot dogs.  Even the vegetarians had fun!  It was a true celebration of Life, Family, Friends and Loved Ones.  That is the best party I went to all year.

And dig those crazy white shoes those guys in the band are wearing!

What better thing to celebrate than life? I, too, am so glad you & Elaine survived. What an empty place my timeline would be without you!

I’m also heartened to know that a reunion with your daughter came from the accident.

Quite the reasons to celebrate, indeed.

Dearest Mark, so good to read this celebratory post! I really admire your perspective on the accident, not acting like everything was perfect (broken ribs, ouch!) but willing to move forward & enjoy your life. :)

October 2010 — all my ribs were shattered when the car in which I was riding was hit by a truck. I still feel the pain of that sometimes. Walking, standing up, sitting up… all those are reasons to party. I am so happy you came out alive… Also, how could anyone not love this song?

I read your post about your broken ribs and your accident.  Actually, that post about brought me to tears.  Tears of identification and tears of joy at the lessons you learned and the joy and peace those have brought you.  My ribs still hurt sometimes, my scar itches all the time and I'm subject to flashbacks about the accident.  It was pretty traumatic.  But the blessings….well, those are to be treasured.

What a wonderful party to have and to turn something horrible into a positive is a treasure indeed. I m so glad you and Elaine made it out alive. For the scar itch, have you tried rubbing vitamin e on it?

Your posts always make me get teary-eyed (in the good way). I am so blown away by your ability to find so much goodness out of tough circumstances. THESE are the kind of stories we need to read this time of year, and this is the kind of party everyone should throw. Bravo. :)

    PS
For the record, I'm so glad you both made it out alive!

Sounds like a lovely night. Wish I could have joined, even if I would have said something to embarrass you. Sorry I missed it.
